Scott Arboretum - Swarthmore College

Swarthmore Recycled wood shingles project

The newest addition to the Swarthmore College campus is the The Wister Education Center and Greenhouse, designed as an energy efficient multipurpose facility. The new 5,200-square foot structure provides a classroom for public educational activities, exhibit areas for horticultural displays and plant evaluations, a greenhouse for cultivation and propagation, and support space for arboretum staff and volunteers.

Twelve Dawn Redwood trees were cut down in 2005 to make room for another building on campus. Those trees were them milled into shingles by CitiLog.

Shingles are not easy to make. They must be tapered from bottom to top, and look rough hewn even though virtually every part of the wood is milled in some way. The beauty and range of colors in these shingles is evident in these photos.

Our craftsmen also turned these bowls from the Dawn Redwood, and the bowls were given to VIP guests at the center's opening.
