The CitiLog Advantage
The sustainable building community frequently asks whether wood is FSC or SFI certified. What they are referring to is whether the wood has been part of a forest that was managed under the guidelines set forth by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) or Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI).
At CitiLog we respect both the FSC and the SFI, and support their overall goals, but we feel strongly that our Full Circle Upcycling practices go way beyond any certification either of these two organizations can offer.
Both the FSC and SFI are trying to make sure the forests that produce the wood and paper products we use are responsibly managed. However, even responsibly managed forests that are certified by either organization are allowed to be logged. There is no choice - the world needs enormous amounts of wood and paper products every day. But no one should be under the illusion that there isn't a tremendous number of trees being cut down by using forestry management practices certified by these organizations.
What both organizations are unable to address is what happens to the tree that blows over in a storm, must come down because of disease, or must be removed to make way for a new building. It is almost as if both organizations are so busy saving the forest, that they don't have time to save a tree. CitiLog on the other hand saves the tree. We take the trees that come down for reasons such as safety, damage and development and we turn them into finished wood products - often products that go right back to the very site the original tree came from. By using CitiLog you may very well be saving the life of a tree in a forest that is managed under FSC or SFI guidelines.
If your building project requires "green wood" we ask that you first consider the trees that CitiLog saves as the source for that wood. The supply of trees that CitiLog can access is virtually limitless. The quality of the wood we handle is exceptional. We have a documented record of helping projects obtain LEED points. And the fact that we save trees that would otherwise be disposed of makes it the ultimate "green wood".
Every tree that CitiLog saves is one less tree that is endangered in the forests that FSC and SFI are trying to protect.
