When the National Park Service & the Independence Visitor Center Corporation decided to build a new cafe at Independence Park in Philadelphia they turned to Erdy McHenry Architecture, a leading Philadelphia firm (architect link). Erdy McHenry created a magnificent design that artfully mixes the old with the new. A key component of the finished project is the Cafe floor. CitiLog was contracted to provide the flooring from upcycled White Oak trees.

This was a very demanding application for wood flooring. The Cafe has a beautiful glass panel front that is frequently retracted to allow open air access. As you can see part of the flooring is constantly exposed to the full range of Philadelphia's seasons and weather.

When the glass front is open the floor is exposed to all the elements. White Oak is a very durable wood that does not expand and contract to the degree that other woods do.

The walkways around the cafe are made of crushed stone. Customers inevitably track the abrasive stone into the cafe. The White Oak flooring will tolerate the abuse well.

The finished project creates a wonderful place to relax, grab a drink and a bite to eat, before heading back to explore all the riches found in the Independence National Historical Park.
