The Geraldine R Dodge Foundation moved into its new headquarters building on Maple Avenue in Morristown, NJ. The building, which houses multiple tenants, was designed by Minno & Wasko to be a LEED Platinum building. The building was erected on the site of the former Epstein's department store, and beams from that store were salvaged by CitiLog and repurposed into two decorative wood walls. The foundation has a wonderful blog entry about the walls (link).
A schematic of the larger of the two walls. CitiLog milled the lumber and fastened it to flexible backing panels that were then wrapped around an aluminum stud frame.
This is the lumber we pulled from Epstein's department store. You can see that some of it was damaged by fire. The lumber was milled into thin wood slats that could hug the sharply curved wall.
The result is nature's art. This lumber was estimated to be approximately 200 years old when it was reclaimed by CitiLog. It could so easily have been thrown away in a landfill where it would have released its carbon into the air, adding to the buildup of greenhouse gases. Instead it will grace this wall for what may be generations to come, educating, and inspiring as to how to use wood, not throw it away.
The wood was applied using a small scale board and batten pattern.
